Product Description

Quantifoils, produced by semiconductor lithographic techniques, are 15 - 20nm thick perforated carbon films with precise, well defined hole sizes, shapes and arrays. Quantifoil support films provide a high percentage of open area in addition to minimising total specimen thickness. Object distortions arising from interactions with the support film are also reduced. They are particularly suited for cryo applications, tomography and low dose microscopy (LEEP).

Square hole, size 7 x 7µm, bar width 2µm, pitch 9µm.

Quantifoil type: S7/2

Quantifoils are supplied as 10 grids in a grid box.

Consistent Performance across Applications

The Quantifoil S7/2 holey carbon films provide uniform and reproducible sample support, ensuring high-quality results in TEM imaging. Their regular hexagonal arrangement of holes allows for optimal particle distribution, minimizing background noise and enhancing image clarity. Researchers working in both academic and industrial laboratories can trust these grids for consistent results across a wide range of biological and materials science applications.

High Electron Transparency

With a film thickness of approximately 12 nm and well-defined holes, Quantifoil S7/2 grids offer exceptional electron transparency. This quality is crucial for cryo-electron microscopy and low dose techniques by allowing superior imaging of delicate samples without excess scatter. Such transparency helps maximize data quality and facilitates high-resolution structural analysis at a molecular level.

FAQs of Quantifoil S7/2 holey carbon films:

Q: How do Quantifoil S7/2 holey carbon films support TEM applications?

A: These films act as stable supports for TEM samples, providing a regular hexagonal array of 2 m holes which enable even particle distribution and reliable imaging. Their thin, amorphous carbon film ensures minimal background for high-quality micrographs, crucial for material science and biological research.

Q: What is the benefit of the regular hexagonal hole pattern?

A: The regular hexagonal arrangement of circular holes allows for uniform sample spreading and enhances imaging consistency. It reduces the likelihood of particle aggregation and provides better control over sample placement, supporting reproducible data acquisition in electron microscopy.

Q: When should I use Quantifoil S7/2 grids for my microscopy work?

A: Quantifoil S7/2 grids are ideal for both cryo-EM and low dose electron microscopy, especially when high electron transparency and precise sample support are required. They are recommended whenever minimal background interference and temperature stability (up to 400C under vacuum) are needed for delicate sample analysis.

Q: Where can I source Quantifoil S7/2 holey grids in the United Kingdom?

A: These films are available through authorized dealers, exporters, manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers, and retailers across the United Kingdom. Choose reputable scientific supply companies that specialize in TEM accessories to ensure genuine Quantifoil products.

Q: What is the process for mounting samples onto Quantifoil S7/2 grids?

A: Samples are typically prepared and deposited onto the surface of the holey carbon film, ensuring particles settle in or near the holes for optimal imaging. Care is taken during handling due to the delicate nature of the thin carbon support and its brittleness.

Q: How does high electron transparency benefit low dose electron microscopy?

A: High electron transparency means fewer electrons scatter as they pass through the grid, yielding clearer images and reducing sample damage during imaging. This quality is particularly advantageous for sensitive biological specimens and high-resolution structural studies.

Q: Can Quantifoil S7/2 holey carbon films withstand heating or vacuum conditions?

A: Yes, these films maintain stability under vacuum and can tolerate temperatures up to 400C, making them suitable for various TEM sample preparation routines that require heating or vacuum environments.
