Product Description

Quantifoil S7/2 Holey Carbon Films

Quantifoils, produced by semiconductor lithographic techniques, are 15 - 20nm thick perforated carbon films with precise, well defined hole sizes, shapes and arrays. Quantifoil support films provide a high percentage of open area in addition to minimising total specimen thickness. Object distortions arising from interactions with the support film are also reduced. They are particularly suited for cryo applications, tomography and low dose microscopy (LEEP).

Square hole, size 7 x 7µm, bar width 2µm, pitch 9µm.

Quantifoil type: S7/2

Quantifoils are supplied as 10 grids in a grid box.

Optimized for TEM Applications

Quantifoil S7/2 Holey Carbon Films set the standard for consistency in TEM applications. With precision hole patterns and a thin, electron-transparent carbon layer, they deliver exceptional imaging quality. Their robust mechanical stability ensures minimal drift and damage during imaging, making them ideal for ultrathin section analysis, whether at room temperature or under cryogenic conditions.

Superior Material and Grid Construction

Manufactured from pure carbon deposited on high-quality copper grids, these films combine chemical purity with mechanical reliability. The 3.05 mm diameter grid is compatible with most TEM holders, while the S7 mesh design provides a consistent 7 m pitch for accurate sample positioning. Uniformity and surface quality enable reproducible results across multiple imaging sessions.

FAQs of Quantifoil S7/2 Holey Carbon Films:

Q: How are Quantifoil S7/2 Holey Carbon Films typically used in TEM sample preparation?

A: These films act as a support substrate for biological and material science samples during Transmission Electron Microscopy. Their regular holey pattern enables precise sample placement and improved imaging contrast for ultrathin sections.

Q: What are the primary benefits of the 2 m hole diameter and 7 m spacing in these films?

A: The 2 m holes and 7 m center-to-center spacing provide a balance between specimen support and open area, allowing for high-resolution imaging while maintaining sufficient mechanical strength.

Q: Where can I source Quantifoil S7/2 Holey Carbon Films in the United Kingdom?

A: These films are available through a range of authorized dealers, suppliers, exporters, and manufacturers serving the UK market. Distributors offer options for both retail and bulk orders to laboratories and research institutions.

Q: When is it recommended to use these holey carbon films for cryo-TEM applications?

A: Quantifoil S7/2 films are ideal for cryo-TEM studies, especially when examining hydrated or vitrified specimens at -196C. Their thermal stability and electron transparency facilitate detailed structural analysis under low-temperature conditions.

Q: What process is involved in mounting and using these films for TEM?

A: Each film is pre-mounted on a standard copper TEM grid. After mounting, researchers place the specimen onto the film, followed by drying or vitrification, before imaging in the TEM. The holey pattern aids in positioning and reduces background noise.

Q: How does the film thickness influence imaging results in TEM?

A: The thin (12-15 nm) pure carbon film ensures minimal electron scattering and background signal, thereby enhancing image contrast and resolutioncrucial for high-precision analyses at the nanoscale.
