Product Description

These recently developed ultra-stable gold supports for electron cryomicroscopy reduce the movement of frozen specimens during imaging. This improves image contrast and quality leading to better 3D reconstruction in TEM tomography applications.

During imaging at cryo-temperatures, traditional carbon supports move, particularly at the beginning of irradiation. This movement blurs images and makes it difficult to determine the structures of small and challenging molecules

Characteristics of UltrAuFoil

  • Thickness of gold foil: approx 500
  • Structure of gold foil: regular square array of micrometer-sized circular holes
  • Geometry: R1.2/1.3 R0.6/1 and R2/2
  • Gold 300 mesh (R0.6/1 or R1.2/1.3 geometry)
  • Gold 200 mesh (R2/2 geometry)
  • Other types are also available
Using UltrAuFoils®, designed at MRC's Laboratory of Molecular Biology by Dr Christopher J Russo and Dr Lori A Passmore and produced by Quantifoil Micro Tools, specimen motion can be reduced significantly.

Precision for High-Resolution Imaging

The regular hole array pattern and ultra-flat gold film of UltrAuFoil grids deliver superior image clarity and consistency. Their surface properties enhance particle distribution, making them ideal for demanding cryo-EM and tomography workflows where resolution and reproducibility are essential.

Engineered for Compatibility and Reliability

These grids are meticulously crafted to match Krios Autogrid specifications. With robust construction, and high durability against mechanical stress, UltrAuFoil Holey Gold Films retain their performance through freezing and handling, resulting in more reliable sample preparation and reduced grid waste.

Pure Gold InnovationNo Added Carbon

Constructed solely from ultra-pure (>99.99%) gold, these grids offer unparalleled electrical conductivity and electron transparency. Their design eliminates the need for additional carbon support, minimizing background noise and maximizing data quality for precision electron microscopy applications.

FAQs of UltrAuFoil Holey Gold Films:

Q: How do UltrAuFoil Holey Gold Films improve cryo-EM sample preparation?

A: With ultrasmooth, ultra-flat pure gold surfaces and a regular array of 1.2 m holes, these grids provide stable, uniform support for delicate samples, enhancing particle distribution and retention. Their robust design minimizes deformation during plunge freezing, enabling higher quality data acquisition in cryo-electron microscopy.

Q: What benefit does the absence of a carbon support layer provide?

A: Eliminating the carbon support layer maximizes electron beam transparency and reduces background noise, allowing for clearer, higher-resolution imaging. This pure gold construction facilitates more accurate structural studies in single-particle and tomography applications.

Q: Where should UltrAuFoil grids be stored to maintain optimal performance?

A: To preserve their ultrasmooth finish and prevent contamination, store these grids in their individual dry, contamination-free boxes at ambient temperature in a dry environment. Avoid exposure to humidity for maximum stability.

Q: When should I use UltrAuFoil Holey Gold Films over traditional carbon-supported grids?

A: These gold grids are especially advantageous for high-resolution cryo-EM or tomography studies where background minimization, stability during freezing, and improved conductivity are required. Use them when sample quality, data integrity, and reproducibility are top priorities.

Q: What process is recommended for handling and preparing these grids?

A: Use clean tools and gloves to handle the grids, minimizing direct contact. Preparation typically involves glow discharging before sample application. The grids enhanced sample adhesion supports consistent particle distribution, while its robust frame resists warping during plunge freezing and transfers.

Q: How do UltrAuFoil grids support compatibility with Krios Autogrid systems?

A: They are specifically designed to fit Krios Autogrid cassettes without adjustment or modification. Their construction guarantees secure placement and reliable performance throughout automated sample loading and imaging workflows, supporting streamlined high-throughput research.
