Product Description

Quantifoil R2/1 Holey Carbon Films - Circular

Quantifoils®, produced by semiconductor lithographic techniques, are 15 - 20nm thick perforated carbon films with precise, well defined hole sizes, shapes and arrays. Quantifoil support films provide a high percentage of open area in addition to minimising total specimen thickness. Object distortions arising from interactions with the support film are also reduced. They are particularly suited for cryo applications, tomography and low dose microscopy (LEEP).

Circular hole, size 2µm dia, separation 1µm, pitch 3µm.

Quantifoil type: R 2/1

Quantifoils are supplied as 10 grids or 100 grids in a grid box.

Exceptional Imaging Performance

The Quantifoil R2/1 Holey Carbon Films provide a uniform, low-background support optimized for electron microscopy. The ultra-flat, high-purity carbon layer reduces contamination, ensuring sharp, reliable images, essential for structural biology and materials science studies.

Versatile Grid and Material Options

With standard mesh sizes (200, 300, 400) and support grid materials in copper, gold, or nickel, these circular grids offer flexibility to suit different specimen requirements. The 3.05 mm standard diameter ensures compatibility across major TEM instrument platforms.

Reliable Stability and Ease of Use

Engineered to endure high beam exposure, the films demonstrate remarkable thermal stability, minimizing sample drift. The robust carbon structure and careful packaging maintain grid integrity, while their insolubility and non-toxic nature add to handling convenience.

FAQs of Quantifoil R2/1 Holey Carbon Films - Circular:

Q: How should Quantifoil R2/1 Holey Carbon Films be stored to maintain their quality?

A: Quantifoil R2/1 grids should be stored in a clean, dry environment, preferably within their individual grid storage boxes to prevent contamination, dust, or physical damage. Avoid exposure to moisture or harsh chemicals to ensure optimal performance during imaging.

Q: What advantages do these holey carbon films provide for TEM and cryo-EM applications?

A: The precisely patterned holes and ultra-flat, pure carbon film minimize background noise and enhance specimen contrast, allowing for highly detailed and accurate imagingespecially critical for structural biology, virology, and materials research.

Q: When is it appropriate to select copper, gold, or nickel support grids?

A: Select the grid material based on your samples chemical compatibility and imaging requirements. Copper is standard, while gold and nickel grids are preferred for samples sensitive to copper or for experiments requiring enhanced conductivity or inertness.

Q: Where are Quantifoil R2/1 Holey Carbon Films commonly used?

A: These films are widely used in research laboratories, universities, and facilities specializing in electron microscopy, particularly for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) sample preparation.

Q: What is the process for preparing samples on these holey carbon grids?

A: Typically, a small volume of specimen is applied directly to the grids surface, then blotted to create a thin layer. For cryo-EM, the grid is vitrified by rapid freezing before imaging. The patterned holes support even sample distribution, crucial for high-contrast analyses.

Q: How do these grids benefit electron microscopy workflows?

A: By offering consistent hole patterns, ultra-flat surfaces, and high purity, Quantifoil R2/1 grids improve sample visibility, facilitate reproducible imaging, and minimize preparation artifacts, streamlining the workflow for advanced electron microscopy studies.

Q: What makes Quantifoil R2/1 grids compatible with most TEM specimen holders?

A: Their standard 3.05 mm diameter and mesh sizes meet the requirements of all common transmission electron microscope holders, ensuring seamless integration and easy exchange between different instruments and applications.
