Product Description

These thin cast films of Formvar have been strengthened with the addition of a layer of evaporated carbon on gold grids. The composite films have extra resilience and strength compared with carbon films. They are recommended for use where the grid has to undergo several processing steps during specimen preparation.

Supplied as 25 or 50 grids in a grid box.

Formvar carbon support films can be applied to other grid sizes, material or type. Further details available on request.

Exceptional Electron Transparency

These grids feature a smooth, uniform Formvar/Carbon film, only 1030 nm thick, which is specifically designed for optimal electron transparency during TEM analysis. This characteristic ensures that specimens can be visualized at high resolution with minimal background interference, leading to clearer and more accurate results.

Robust Gold Structure for Reliable Support

Manufactured with a 300 mesh gold grid, these supports provide both structural integrity and chemical inertness. Gold ensures excellent resistance against corrosion and reactions during sample preparation and imaging, supporting reproducible and consistent results for both biological and materials science specimens.

Simple Handling and Storage

To maintain grid quality, handle only with fine tweezers or gloves to prevent contamination. Store the grids in a dry, airtight desiccator to prolong their shelf life. Following these practices preserves the smoothness and electron transparency of the film, safeguarding the performance of each grid for sensitive applications.

FAQs of Formvar/Carbon on 300 Mesh Gold (Pack of 50):

Q: How should I handle the Formvar/Carbon on 300 Mesh Gold grids to avoid contamination?

A: These grids should be handled exclusively with fine tweezers or while wearing clean gloves. Direct contact can introduce oils and particulates, so careful handling is essential to maintain film integrity and sample quality.

Q: What is the main benefit of using gold grids coated with Formvar and carbon in TEM applications?

A: Gold grids coated with Formvar and carbon offer high stability, optimal electron transparency, and chemical inertness. This combination provides a clear background for imaging, ensuring that delicate specimens are well-supported and visible at high resolution in TEM.

Q: When is it advisable to use these grids over standard copper grids?

A: These grids are preferred when chemical resistance is a priority, such as with corrosive or reactive samples, or when high purity and minimal artifact backgrounds are required for precise biological or materials science analysis.

Q: Where should I store these TEM support grids to maximize their shelf life?

A: To maintain their quality, store the grids in a desiccator or similarly dry environment. This prevents moisture absorption and reduces the risk of degrading the thin Formvar/Carbon film.

Q: What applications are these Formvar/Carbon on gold grids best suited for?

A: They are ideal for supporting ultrathin biological or material science specimens in transmission electron microscopy (TEM), where both sample support and minimal interference from the grid are critical for image quality.

Q: How does the film thickness affect TEM specimen preparation and imaging?

A: The films thinness (approximately 1030 nm) ensures high electron transparency, reducing background noise and permitting accurate imaging of fine specimen structures during TEM analysis.

Q: What is the correct process for mounting specimens on these grids?

A: Carefully deposit the sample onto the film, ensuring even dispersion and minimal disturbance to the support layer. Allow it to dry in a clean, dust-free environment before proceeding with TEM imaging.
