Product Description

Holey carbon films have many uses in microscopy but for certain applications the mesh sizes of standard TEM grids are too large to support the sample. Continuous carbon films can also be a problem due to the fact that the thin film can inelastically scatter electrons and contribute to background noise. Holey carbon films therefore are a suitable alternative.
Holey carbon films have holes of various sizes up to 100m. In addition to providing support, the increased image contrast in the regions of the holes compared to regions of film is also of benefit. Typical applications include biological and materials science and cryo-TEM.

Supplied as 25 or 50 grids in a grid box.
Holey carbon support films can be applied to other grid sizes, material or type. Further details available on request.

Precision Support for TEM Applications

Designed to meet the demanding standards of electron microscopy laboratories, these holey carbon films on copper grids offer optimal support for TEM sample preparation. The random micron-scale holes provide excellent particle distribution and minimize beam-induced contamination. Each grids film is delicately fabricated, ensuring both durability and transparency needed for high-resolution imaging.

High Purity and Consistency

Manufactured with >99.9% purity copper and high-grade carbon film, these grids maintain stable performance and structural integrity. The typical film thickness of ~20 nm enables exceptional electron transparency, while random hole sizes accommodate a variety of specimen sizes and distributions. Consistent grid specification supports reproducible results across research sessions.

Safe Handling and Long-Term Storage

Each grid is extremely fragile and should only be handled with fine tweezers under clean, dust-free conditions. The anti-static grid box with individual slots minimizes physical damage and contamination risk. Store grids in a dry, controlled environment at room temperature to ensure stability and effectiveness for years.

FAQs of Holey Carbon Films on 400 Mesh Copper Grids (Pack of 25):

Q: How should Holey Carbon Films on 400 Mesh Copper Grids be handled during sample preparation?

A: These grids are very fragile due to their thin carbon film and should only be handled using fine tweezers. Avoid touching the film surface directly; instead, grasp the grid by its copper edge to prevent damage and contamination.

Q: What are the main applications of these holey carbon grids?

A: They are primarily used as support films for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) sample preparation, particularly in nanotechnology, particle analysis, and materials science research. The holey structure facilitates analysis of particles that span grid openings.

Q: When is hydrophilic treatment recommended for these grids?

A: Hydrophilic treatment can be requested if your samples require enhanced spreading or adhesion onto the carbon film. Untreated grids are standard, but hydrophilic surfaces are beneficial for certain biological or aqueous specimens.

Q: Where should I store unused grids to maximize their shelf life?

A: Store the grids in the provided anti-static box in a dry, clean environment at room temperature. Avoid exposure to moisture, dust, and high temperatures to ensure stability and long-term usability.

Q: What is the benefit of the random holey pattern on the carbon film?

A: The random distribution of micron-scale holes enhances particle separation and visibility during TEM imaging. This structure supports a wide range of specimen types and assists in obtaining high-contrast images.

Q: How do I ensure compatibility with my TEM holder?

A: These grids measure 3.05 mm in diameter, which is compatible with most standard TEM holders. They meet TEM laboratory standards, ensuring reliable use across various instrument models.

Q: What is the advantage of using high purity copper as the support grid material?

A: High purity (>99.9%) copper minimizes background signal and reduces contamination risks, providing a clean and stable platform for sensitive TEM analyses.
